Stumbling Stones: the new web portal that gives voice to memory

Pordenone celebrates Remembrance Day with a packed programme from 22 January to 3 February: ceremonies, student performances, guided tours, workshops and exhibitions.

On Friday 30 January, at 11:00 am in the Sala Degan of the Pordenone Civic Library, MEDIASTUDIO presented pietredinciampo.com, the first dynamic and responsive web portal dedicated to the Stumbling Stones of Pordenone and Ronchi dei Legionari. Designed to expand in the future to other municipalities in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Italy, the portal is curated by MEDIASTUDIO at the instigation of the municipalities of Pordenone and Ronchi dei Legionari, with the contribution of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.

The result of a joint effort, the project involves students from the Leopardi-Majorana High School, who have combed through the municipal historical archives together with the ANED of Pordenone and Ronchi. Through interactive maps, period photos, biographies, testimonies and geolocations of the places of deportation, users can explore the names engraved on the Stones, virtually navigate the streets of the cities and immerse themselves in stories of life, deportation and resilience.

The press conference was attended by:
  • the Councillor for Education of the Municipality of Pordenone - Pietro Tropeano;
  • the Mayor of the Municipality of Ronchi dei Legionari - Mauro Benvenuto;
  • the President of ANED - Patrizia Del Col;
  • the Headmistress of the Leopardi Majorana High School - Prof. Rossana Viola;
  • Milvio Zaccariotto for MEDIASTUDIO.
Also present in the room were Silvia Pettarin, teacher at the Leopardi Majorana High School, Monica Carta, Councillor for Culture of Ronchi dei Legionari, Federica Bon, Municipal Councillor of Ronchi dei Legionari, Libero Tardivo, President of ANED - Ronchi dei Legionari section -, the President of the cultural association Leali delle Notizie Luca Perrino, the Director of the State Archives Silvia Rago and an official, the Headmaster of the IC Pordenone Torre school, some relatives of those to whom the Stumbling Stones were dedicated, and some classes of students from the Leopardi Majorana High School accompanied by their teachers.

The event, open to all, offers a preview of this innovative tool for preserving and spreading remembrance.
