THE PROJECT

A PROJECT TO REMEMBER
Stolpersteine (literally “stumbling stones”) constitute a participatory memorial conceived by the artist Gunter Demnig. The project is widespread throughout Europe, with approximately 110,000 stones installed in more than 2,000 cities across 36 European countries.
In order to honor the memory of individual victims of National Socialism, the artist produces small brass plaques mounted on 10×10×10 cm concrete blocks. These are subsequently installed along street edges or on sidewalks in front of the buildings where the victims once lived or where there is documented evidence that they worked.
Each plaque bears the inscription “Here lived…” or “Here resided…”, followed by the individual’s name, date of birth, place of deportation, and date of death, where such information is known.

On 18 January 2020, through a project promoted by the Leopardi–Majorana High School, the city of Pordenone became part of the extensive, open-air Stolpersteine memorial, which extends across Europe with approximately 110,000 stones commemorating those who perished as victims of Nazi-Fascist violence.

A total of 29 stones have been installed within the city of Pordenone, in addition to those located in neighboring municipalities.
A total of 43 stones have so far been installed in the municipality of Ronchi dei Legionari.
