Antonio Lionello Rossi, known as Nello, was born in
Sarone di Caneva on
12 May 1925 into a family of artists: his father, Pio Rossi, was a painter of some renown, a teacher, and a school principal.
During the Second World War, Nello was forced to work as a
laborer for the Todt Organization in Udine. Like his brother Mario, a partisan in the Garibaldi Division, Nello also joined the Resistance, becoming a member of the
Osoppo Division. On 14 November 1944 he was captured following a denunciation while guarding a weapons depot in Rorai Grande and was imprisoned first in Pordenone and then in Udine. From there he was deported to Germany and arrived at the
Flossenbürg concentration camp on 14 January 1945; two weeks later he was transferred to the
Hersbruck subcamp, where he died of physical exhaustion on 23 February 1945.
Nello loved drawing and dreamed of becoming an aviator.
His drawings of airplanes and birds, rich in careful detail, evoke dreams of freedom.
